By my scientific calculation (aka: using my fingers to count) I have 67 days of summer left before classes begin again. That's just a little over 2 months to live up the few warm and beautiful days Michigan gets before someone shakes the snow globe up and winter comes again.
Fortunately, Grand Rapids Public Museum is coordinating with my remaining summer days and offering up "71 days of Fun", starting Monday the 15th and heading all the way into Fall, wrapping up on September 4th. (Apparently they get a longer summer break than I do...)
Much like you remember the days of the week by what clever alliteration allows you to hit the bars (Wobbly Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursdays are personal favorites), the GR Public Museum has come up with cleverly themed days as well. Check out Treasure Tuesdays, which focus on the art of collecting, or Wacky Wednesdays, full of hands-on arts and craft activities.
Stay later with the museum's extended summer hours (open til 9 p.m. on Tuesdays) and you can zone out to the Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon' laser show($7), or the kid-approved "Solar System Safari" at the planetarium ($3).
Throughout the 71 days of fun you can also help be a part of an upcoming exhibit, "Leonardo DaVinci: Machines in Motion", by adding a piece to the giant 13,200 piece puzzle depicting DaVinci's work "The Last Supper". Webcams will track the puzzling skills of visitors all summer, and the completed work will be laminated and hung in the new exhibit when it opens September 5th.
Summer rates for the GR Public Museum are $5 for adults and seniors and $3 for children aged 3-17 and students with a valid I.D. Carousel rides are also free all summer.
